2 Years and 20,000 Sandwiches and Counting

Making Sandwiches for the Hungry.

Over 18,000 20,000 PB & J  sandwiches have been handed out to Cleveland’s homeless by members of Temple Israel Ner Tamid’s (TINT) congregation. Since the program started in November 2008, they have made 180 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches each and every week.

Tikkun Olam is a Hebrew phrase that means, "repairing or "perfecting the world." Members of TINT try to help a little corner of the world every Friday night after every Friday night Shabbath service. Over a dozen congregants of all ages help. Grownups and seniors make and bag sandwiches; children as young as nine bag or box them.

Where Do They Go
Once all the bread is gone, the sandwiches are taken downtown and distributed directly to people living on the streets. Any remaining food is brought to shelters or organizations that are open past midnight.

Local Companies Help Out
Schwebel’s Bakery and Panera Bread Company donate loaves of bread each week to go with the jars of peanut butter and jelly donated by individuals. There are also donations of plastic bags, gloves and hand sanitizer used when making the sandwiches.
